It was wonderful having the chance to meet with each of you to discuss your child's progress in third grade. We were happy to hear that the students are happy in room 12 and are discussing what we are learning with you at home. We appreciate your support with homework, reminders, and your words of encouragement to help your child be the best learner he/she can be. We feel lucky to have such a great group of third graders. Here is what we have been working on in each of our subjects this week:
Math: We have been continuing to work on our 6, 7, 8 facts. We are working on answering more complicated word problems and determining if our answer is reasonable. The third graders are doing a very good job writing equations, choosing correct operations, using a variable in their equation and also adding a unit to their answer. We are about half way through chapter 2 right now and hope to wrap it up after Thanksgiving.
Social Studies: The students have been able to use what they learned from our reading in Social Studies as they have spent the week completing social scientist projects. They were able to think like an economist by writing a story about a time in their life where they earned money. They thought like a geographer by selecting a place that they would like to one day visit and giving reasons why this place is intriguing to them. They thought like an political scientist as they wrote a letter to Mr. Whan making a suggestion about how they could make Bemis an even better school. Finally they thought like a historian by making a timeline of their life. We are pleased with their effort and ideas on this assignment and can't wait to display some of their work in the hallway as well as share it with you on Seesaw.
Reading: We continue to focus our attention on fiction. We are discussing our main character of our story. We are identifying the main problem of the story and discussing the author's message. Students are having a good time meeting with their reading groups!
Writing: We have selected 3 big ideas that we would like to use for our 3 essays. Big ideas might be things like respecting nature, being a good friend or accepting change. For each big idea the students came up with 2 pieces of evidence from their life where they learned this lesson. Now we are working on writing in paragraphs. Our paragraphs will be organized with an introduction sentence, 3 details and a conclusion sentence. We will be working hard at learning this structure and then students will be asked to write in paragraphs throughout the rest of the school year.
We hope that you enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving break with your families. We are so thankful for supportive parents and hard working students. Thank you for making our job of teaching your children one we enjoy each and every day!
