Understanding our Math Vocabulary
Today we spent time in math to take a close look at all of the vocabulary words that we have learned this year. We generated a list of words, we worked in teams to pronounce and define the words verbally. We then sorted them into 5 categories: multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, and problem solving vocabulary. After they were sorted we each made an example for each concept and drew that example on an index card. We made a big poster of these sorted words and hung it in our classroom. We hope that this helped us to better understand this important math vocabulary as well as give us a place in our classroom to reference if we come across a word that we don't understand. Take a peek at our pictures below:

Learning About Surface Tension
As you know, we are working hard to understand the various properties of water. Yesterday we used our Close Reading strategies to read and understand an article about surface tension. The first time we read the article, we read it from beginning to end without stopping. Our goal was to just get the flow for the article and understand the "gist." The second time we read the article we used symbols to mark the text. We used an X by a word we did not know, we put two stars by important points and we circled things we did not understand. The third time we read the article, we wrote down one sentence in the margin about what each paragraph was mostly about. We agreed that we understood the article at a much deeper level after we took the time to slow our brains down and really think about what we were reading.

Scientists in Action
As you know, the third graders have been learning a lot about measurement in science. Today our goal was to understand what it means to measure capacity. We followed the scientific process as we discussed the purpose of our investigation, presented the materials, made a hypothesis, gathered data and finally wrote a conclusion for our experiment.
We had a cup that was marked at 4 different levels. Our groups had the estimate the volume of water that would fill to each level. We then would use a syringe and a graduated cylinder to measure the actual volume. We then used our subtraction skills to find the difference between our estimation and our measured volume. We were proud that our estimations got better each time we practiced!
Check out our pictures below to see us working hard in our science groups!

Jog-A-Thon
We are getting very excited about our upcoming Bemis Jog-A-Thon. The students have been discussing how many laps they hope to run and are excited to experience this fun event! Please remember that the school goal is for every child to raise money for Bemis by collecting pledges from friends and family members. It would be awesome if we could get as many students as possible to meet the building goal of raising $65. We are excited to announce our special teacher prize to the student who raises the most money in our class:).
Parents and siblings are welcome to come and cheer us on a week from TODAY, Friday, October 2nd. Our class will begin running at 11:30. If you are able to come, bring your camera and meet us outside in the field for a class picture and to cheer on your Bemis bear! We can't wait to see you then!

Learning to Work as a Team!
The third graders were given the mission to try to build the tallest free standing tower they could build using only tape and straws. Each team was given 10 minutes to work together to create a plan and implement their plan in the building process. Teams not only had fun with this tower building but also learned a lot about what it means to be a team member.
Things we will think about when working in a group this year are...
1. Share the materials
2. Work together
3. Communicate in a loud, clear voice
4. Use good eye contact so your teammates know you are listening.
5. Help each other out
6. Listen to your teammates
7. Don't be bossy
8. Give everyone a job
We will practice these skills all year long as we learn to work well with one another! Check out pictures of our straw towers below.

Welcome Back to School!
We hope everyone had a wonderful summer! We are so happy to be back and are ready for a great year together. This classroom website will help us feel connected this year and will give both the room 12 students and parents a place to showcase learning and communicate about the exciting things that are happening in third grade. We can't wait to meet our wonderful group of third graders at the Bemis Meet and Greet on September 2nd from 3:30-4:30. This will be a special time for you to see our classroom and meet your teachers. Don't forget to bring your school supplies so that you can get everything organized for the first day of school. Remember to write your name on your supplies and take them out of their packaging to make it easier to organize. The button below will take you to your supply list in case you need it! Can't wait to see you soon!
