February Book-it
This month, students are asked to choose a Realistic Fiction story to read at home. Students should choose 20 nights to read for 20 minutes or more. As students read, they should keep in mind what they are learning about the character. After they have finished their reading, students will create a "Peel the Fruit" poster based on the main character. This routine is designed to help students "dig deeper" into their thinking. As students read, they can keep track of what characters are doing and saying, traits that describe their character, connections they can make, and the lesson they can learn from the character. Please see the example I have provided that we did in class to help you as you create yours!
Students have been doing a great job and have shown a great deal of improvement with their presentations. We have worked on giving our audience eye contact, speaking loud and clearly, and preparing what we want to say before we present. Please remind your child that their presentation should be no longer than 2-3 minutes! :)
If you have any questions, please let me know!! I think you will enjoy this project!

January Book-It
Since January is a shorter month for Book-it, the student are being asked to select a short story, poem or article to complete their book project. This month they should use their reading selection to complete the thinking routine, Color, Symbol, Image. This is a familiar routine for the students so they should be able to complete it mostly on their own. They are to think of a color, symbol and image that shows the authors theme or main purpose for writing the selection. We discussed in class to be creative in their choices and spend time writing why they chose their particular color, symbol and image to match the story. This month, if the students would like to use one of their familiar apps on their iPads to complete their project they may chose to do so. If not, they can also make a paper version of their project. See attached documents below for more information regarding this month's project.

December Book-It
The third graders are doing a terrific job on their Book-It projects each month. This month they have been asked to do some research on their families. We are hoping that they will spend time talking with family members (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles) about their past. We would like for the third graders to write down questions that they would like to ask their family members and use the information they learn to write a report about their family. Things that they might be interested in are:
1. How/when/why did their family originally come to the United States?
2. What are family traditions that their family takes part in?
3. Is there a special meaning behind their first or last name?
Along with their report on their family, we are also asking the students to create a family tree. We would like to see 4 generations on their tree: the student, parents, grandparents, and great grandparents. Read the documents below to learn more about the report and the family tree.
In order to help the students structure their time, a good timeline to complete this project is below:
Week 1: Write down questions that they would like to ask family members
Week 2: Interview family members and start report
Week 3: Finish the report (revise and edit) and begin to sketch family tree.
Week 4: Finish the family tree and practice their presentation at home.
Please remember, the writing should be written in the students own words. Also, if the report is typed please make sure the student does the typing. Parents can assist with the project but the project should be led by the student. The presentation should not be any longer than 2-3 minutes. Thank you so much!

November Book-It
This month, readers will focus on the fiction genre both in school and at home. For this month's Book It Assignment, you must spend time reading fiction books at home. Along with your monthly reading, you will complete a "Step Inside Character Hanging" that will display your understanding of one of the main characters in a book you choose to read at home. Below are some of the details for the project.
Remember students, this is YOUR project not mom and dads. Your parents can help you select good books, stay organized with your project throughout the month, help you gather ideas, and design your hanging, but the report should be written in your own words and be your thinking.
Continue to use a timeline to plan our your tasks throughout the month so you are not rushing to complete it at the end of the month. Use the suggested timeline if you wish!
Week #1: Make a trip to the Troy library and select some new books to read during the month. Choose one book you will use for your character hanging.
Week #2: Read your book and use strategies to "step inside" the main character's perspective.
Week #3: Write your report about your character. Create a 3-D head and attach it to the report.
Week #4: Start practicing your presentation at home so you know what you would like to say in front of the class.
- Read 20 minutes 5 nights a week
- Determine the main character and get to know him or her (use strategies we discuss in class)
- After reading, create a 3-D head that symbolizes the main character.
- Attach a report that illustrates everything you know about this character and the journeys you went on to the "body" of your character hanging.
- Use the directions in your packet along with the rubric to help guide your project.

October Book-It
This month we will begin our monthly book projects. For this assignment you must spend time reading books at home. We are asking that each third grader read a minimum of 20 minutes a night for 5 nights out of the week. Along with this great reading you will be working on a project that you will present to the class at the end of the month. Your project for October is to write a letter to an author of one of the fiction books that you read at home. On the project directions we have made suggestions about what you might include in your letter. After you present this book and letter to the class at the end of the month, if you give us an addressed and stamped envelope we will mail your letter to your author and see if we can get a response back! Remember students, this is YOUR project not mom and dads. Your parents can help you select good books, stay organized with your project throughout the month, help you gather ideas but the letter should be written in your own words and be your thinking.
One thing that we will learn through these projects is how to organize our time when we are working on a larger assignment. Your monthly timeline might look as follows:
Week #1: Make a trip to the Troy library and select some new books to read during the month
Week #2: Decide which author you would like to write to and generate a list of ideas that you might include in your letter.
Week #3: Write your letter and ask mom or dad to help you edit it to correct any mistakes.
Week #4: Start practicing your presentation at home so you know what you would like to say in front of the class.
We hope this is a fun learning experience for all of you! We have attached the project directions, rubric, and reading calendar below in case you misplace yours during the month.
