We have had a very exciting week in room 12 preparing for our much anticipated third grade musical as well as wrapping up a few units of study. Although we were so excited to receive our first snow day of the year, we were also a little disappointed that it happened to fall on the night of our special concert. Don't worry, we are sure there will be plans made to do the concert at a later date and we will inform you of this information as soon as we hear anything. Read below to see what your third grader has been learning...
Reading: We culminated our character study unit by doing character study "Step Inside" projects. The third graders pretended to be their character and told lessons that they learned, turning points of the story, and described how they changed throughout the story from the character's point of view. Then each student was able to decide how they would like to publish their report. Many used various apps on their iPad for this and some decided to make posters. It was fun to see how creative the third graders were with this project. Please make sure to take a peek at them on your child's SeeSaw account, they always LOVE reading your comments!!
Writing: We have finished revising and editing our personal narratives and now have spent time this week publishing. For this piece, the third graders used the wireless keyboards and practiced their typing skills by typing their stories. They are so excited to have a printed copy both for our class book as well as to bring home to you. They truly did a fantastic job on their pieces.
Math: We are working on learning new strategies for adding larger numbers. We have noticed that although adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digits was practiced last year, we need to revisit these concepts this year. We will be taking time in class to help those that need it with a refresher on these topics. Also we have worked together to sort all the new math vocabulary words we have learned so far this year. We made examples for most words and added them to a large chart in our room. We are hoping that by spending the time revisiting these words we will have a greater understanding of math vocabulary which will help us in our problem solving.
Social Studies: We are finishing our journey through the Northeast region and will be having our test on Monday. Along with the test, the third graders will be conducting a culminating project. They will pretend that they work for the news and they will be interviewing a traveler who just came from the Northeast. They will be writing their own interview questions and using their technology to video the interview. We can't wait to share them with you!
